PuTTY carries no licensing fee. On Windows, pick the 64-bit or 32-bit MSI so putty.exe, puttygen.exe, pscp.exe, psftp.exe, plink.exe, and pageant.exe land in one pass. Filenames usually echo your CPU architecture (most modern PCs take the 64-bit installer). After installation, follow the Step-by-step guide on this site for the first launch and SSH login.

Quick start

Shortest path for most readers.

Grab the official Windows installer (64-bit matches most current PCs), execute the MSI, then start PuTTY from the Start menu. Spin up keys in PuTTYgen whenever the server demands public-key login.

MSI together with portable zip.

Select the build aligned with your processor architecture. After setup, store a session with host, port 22, and SSH. For Telnet-only work, puttytel.exe stays in the package.

If policy demands it, confirm the publisher and checksum bundled with your download before executing the installer.

macOS & Linux

Repositories and ports.

On Linux, install putty and commonly putty-tools for puttygen. On macOS, Homebrew, MacPorts, or comparable channels publish the same family—use whatever your administrator authorizes.

Security

Before you dial in.

When policy demands it, validate checksums bundled with your download. On the first SSH handshake, compare the host-key fingerprint with your administrator. Guard private keys behind a passphrase.
